A few weeks ago I had a crawling worries that I could not completely place. I usually have no fear, but something really bothered me.
I tried to determine it. I have everything that has to do with health, family or work. I was not under an urgent work theadline and my task list was manageable (shout-out to Kate Depetro for the help!).
I wondered if it was just that seasonal back-to-school feeling-which I would wear on the first day, if I could open my closet without embarrassing myself, and whether Tracy and I would be in the chemical class together. But it wasn’t.

Perhaps it was that some of the leaves on the trees in Central Park were already yellow and rose after a hot summer? No, I am ready for less humidity, cooler temperatures and football (ha ha, not really).
In the end I realized what I was worried about – Percy. Oh, he is doing well. He is “fit as a butcher dog”, as my husband Peter says.

But it’s just that … I recently noticed some white hair on Percies’s chin, and I started to panic that he would be five years old. And, as all dog owners tend to do, I started counting the years.
Peter and I always talk about Percy. He brings us closer together, keeps the mood lighter at home and makes us more in the present life.
“If he is 5, then we have a maximum of nine years, and by that time, I will (not say), and I will not get to see him enough during the week and I miss his life,” and so on.
“Peter, have you seen these white hair under his chin?” I asked.
“Yes, but remember, Vizlas go early gray. He will only be 4 next month.”
‘Guard. He only becomes 4? Are you sure? ‘
Peter has done mathematics quickly. “Yes, he was born in 2021. We picked him up in November.”

Relief flooded over me. I felt that I had won with him for a year. “Thank good,” I said.

And Peter didn’t think I was crazy (about that).
Jasper – “America’s Dog” – died four years ago after a quick fight against cancer. It was tragic and I think of him, and our previous Vizsla, Henry, every day.

The heartache decreases, but I can still be brought into tears immediately when I think of them.

Percy is a worthy successor. He is different from them. He is faster, Goofier and, I dare to say, even more beautiful.

He likes to chase balls and has taught himself to put three out of four in his mouth at the same time.

He loves the beach, but only to run on it – he won’t swim like those for him. He hates to be outside his depth.

It used to bother me, but then I decided it was safer if he stays on the coast. In my eyes. I can’t stop watching him.
Just like the 68 million households in America with dogs, I enjoy having a dog in my house.

That is one of the best things from National Dog Day – a reminder of how special these pets are for us and how we should live with them in the present. They are not worried about tomorrow. Or about a few gray hairs. They are completely in the moment – where we should be.
