Greeneville, tenn. (AP) -A man in Tennessee with the same name as New Yorkes -legend Babe Ruth is confronted with charges, claiming that he used the names of hundreds of dead or retired pro baseball players to make fake claims for payments in class Action settlements.
George Herman Ruth is accused of 91 counts in the indictment in the American court in Greeneville, Tennessee, at the end of last week. The 69-year-old from Morristown is accused of post fraud, aggravated identity theft, fraudulent use of sofi numbers, money laundering, making false statements to his probation officer and the possession of firearms after he had previously been convicted of crimes.
The indictment says that Ruth obtained or tried to obtain more than $ 550,000 through the scheme. He sought payouts in lawsuits, ranging from accusations from contact lens prices to claims from racial discrimination against a workforce, adds the indictment.
Ruth opened more than a dozen postboxes in various cities in Tennessee for themselves and for Sham companies and subsequently submitted hundreds of fraudulent claim forms to Class Action managers throughout the country, according to the indictment. He used the names of the old baseball players or variations of his own name and the Sofi numbers of ignorant victims, said prosecutors.
The indictment does not state the names of the players who claimed to be Ruth, but it does describe some of them. For example, some played for detached teams such as the Philadelphia Athletics, the St. Louis Browns and the Kansas City Packers.
A public defender who represented Ruth refused to comment on the charges.
Ruth had previously been guilty in a federal court in Indiana for a regulation to commit fraud in social security. In 2020 he was sentenced to prison before he went on trial from October 2023 to July 2025, according to judicial information.
